Spring Fever and Capsule Wardrobes

Oh wow, I have unintentionally been MIA lately. Sorry about that.

I really hope all of you are somewhere south and already feeling the warm up in late March. I wish that was the case here in Buffalo. (Note to self: move down south.) Don’t you wish it could be that easy to pick up and go? I actually don’t even know where we move if given the opportunity to move anywhere! Where do you think you’d go?

I’m seeing all the new spring and summer clothes coming out and I’m over here with this growing bump wishing so badly to purchase all the cute things. The only things I can realistically look at are shoes right now. I don’t know how long it’ll take me to bounce back. Plus, I have no idea if nursing will work out for me. That could potentially affect my wardrobe choices.

Have you ever heard of a capsule wardrobe?

Until last summer I never did. I’m with you if haven’t. Guess what? It’s a really great way to keep you from spending wastefully on clothes. Did you know that it’s reasonable to allot 5% of your monthly budget to clothing? 5% every month. Which means it’s reasonable to assume that every person in the universe should be buying new clothes every month! Let’s say your yearly income is $36K, then in one year you “should” spend $1,800 on clothes alone. Let that sink in for a second.

Rather than buying for the season, four times a year, effectively you could be purchasing here and there every month. Look back at your shopping habits…how often do you find yourself mindlessly shopping at Target, Amazon or your favorite mall stores in person or online?

Capsule wardrobes erase this mentality. The soul purpose is to select quality clothing in basic colors that can withstand being washed more often. If you count all the pieces in your closet, I guarantee you you’d easily hit between 100 and 200 pieces. What if we knocked it down to 50 pieces? When you hear 50, your ears probably perked up and you immediately thought “NO FLIPPING WAY!!”

Let me break it down: 5 sweaters, 5 tank tops, 20 shirts, 5 blouses, 5 button downs and 10 bottoms. That’s reasonable now, right? We all have jeans in our closet that sit there forever and never get worn. Now’s the time. You’re going to need to purge. And you’re never going to look back! When you reach into your closet, you easily have everything you need for the perfect outfit every time.
